30 Day Challenges… Day 7
“A Song That Reminds You Of A Certain Match”. Well, Las Ketchup would be one but I spoke of Seville yesterday! So…
Daft Punk – One More Time.
Released in November 2000 it came to the fore right in the middle of Martin O’Neill’s first season. That season was the most successful in a generation as far as trophies go as Celtic swept the board. First the League Cup was won in March thanks to a Larsson hat trick in the final, then the League title was added in quick time as we won it before the stupid SPL split. But this track will remind me of the final game that season – the Scottish Cup final against Hibernian.
We’d beaten them 5-2 in the league a few weeks previous but that counted for nothing. The league was already over and anything can happen in a one off game. Hibs has the added incentive of having not won the Scottish Cup since 1902, in a final when they beat Celtic. 99 years on and they had a chance to do it again.
Lubo Moravcik gave us an early blow when he had to go off injured, but his replacement Jackie McNamara more than made up for his loss. Jackie gave us the lead five minutes before half time and then setup Larsson early in the second half for the second goal of the game. When Henrik scored from the spot ten minutes from time to make it 3-0 we knew the cup – and the treble – was ours.
Three times in three months we had lifted a trophy. Now, one more time we were gonna celebrate. Lyrics from the Daft Punk song that reverberated around Hampden. I was at home watching on the TV, but every time I hear that song I think back to clinching – to date – the only treble Celtic have won in my life time. It’s only our third ever with the other two coming in the late 60s, so it makes it all the more special.
As for Hibs? Well, it’s now 109 years and counting. They won’t win it this year either as they’re already out. Celtic on the other hand play their semi final on Sunday. We won’t win the treble this year but fingers crossed for a double!
